Around the world, the construction
industry begins to understand the value of wood, a renewable
material that grows just outside our doorstep. Wood is everyday
reborn as products we could only dream of 100 years ago. What role
will wood play for sustainable architecture, industry, science,
economy and societies? It is about time for Sweden to look into the
process from plant to product!

Walter Unterrainer: WOOD, A SUSTAINABLE BUILDING MATERIAL?
Walter Unterrainer is Professor at Umeå School of Architecture
and Director of "Laboratory of Sustainable Architectural
Production". He is an Austrian architect who underlines how
spatiality is superior to technological issues when it comes to
sustainability.

Hubert Riess: MODULE CITY
Hubert Riess is an Austrian architect who has been an assistant
of Jan Gezelius and also worked for Ralph Erskine in the 1980's.
Riess' philosophy of wood is based upon experiences of industrial
module solutions within a super tight budget. The computerized
production is playing a significante role in the change-over to a
sustainable wooden architecture according to Riess.

sustainable wooden architecture since the 1980s. Large-sized load
bearing structures suitable for industrial buildings is every day
life in his practice. Amongst many awards, he recieved the "Global
Award for Sustainable Architecture" in 2007.

10:00 TALKSHOP
The importance of wood in the modern construction industry in
Sweden today is increas- ing. Legal revisions during the 1990s and
the technological development make it possible to handle big scale
load bearing systems of wood. For instance, the issues of fire or
noise have been solved. If we want to improve modern wood building
technology further, we must develop our knowledge within all
sections of the project process - from idea to completed
building.
How will the collaboration between architects, engineers,
contractors and stakeholders help develop the Swedish wood
industry? Can Swedish wooden architecture of tomorrow get an
international breakthrough?
Our buildings must give an understanding of the sustainable
society to secure success over time. Maybe the future of wood lays
in the collaboration between engineering and interpretation by
dynamic reasoning. Then, the art of wood building can provide
people in the sustainable society with living space at the same
time as it acts as its image.
Take the chance to pick the best brains of Europe and apply
their knowledge to Swedish wooden architecture! What can Sweden
learn from Europe? What should we avoid? How do we boost quality,
productivity and innovation in the field of building with wood?
Will new technology create an opening for new relations between
engineering, architecture and economy? And which are the
consequences within wooden architecture and the industry? Are the
Swedish architects brave enough to reclaim their position in the
process? And last but not least, why don ́t we include the question
of managing these wooden buildings?
Talkshops will be arranged in groups. A chairman from each group
will provide a summarise and form a panel for a final discussion.
Themes to discuss are those from the previous day and everything
that is in the limelight of wooden architecture today.
