School of Civic Action

Summer workshop in London

The 'School of Civic Action' is a gathering of students from across Europe with local citizens from London to collaborate, co-produce and co-create in the city of London. This two week summer school is a partnership between Umeå School of Architecture, public works, Tate Exchange, Roskilde Festival and Curry Stone Design Honourees

The workshop will focus around this year's Tate Exchange theme of 'Production'. Students will participate in a two-week summer school at the Tate Modern and sites across London - engaging in productive and performative pedagogies around Civic City Making, whilst testing new knowledge via a live build project at R-Urban in Poplar, East London.

The School will bring together students across all ages and disciplinary backgrounds, offering spaces in the program for citizens in London as well as students from UMA and Central Saint Martins. The aim is to share and produce knowledge around civic actions, access to land, ecology and future city visions, using the public platform of the Tate Modern as a space to engage with a wider audience (a few thousand visitors). Whilst the School of Civic Action will also have a physical output via a series of live-build elements which will be designed and made in collaboration with key local stakeholders.
